Environmental Technician

Expectations:

General duties may include performing environmental investigations, Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs), Phase II Investigations, radon testing and mitigation, lead and asbestos surveys, mold investigations, regulatory compliance, remediation, vapor intrusion investigations, waste characterization, soil removal/disposal, reporting, and cost-tracking.  Provide project oversight for environmental projects involving development of Health and Safety Plans, conduct quarterly groundwater monitoring, leaking underground storage tank (LUST) investigation and removal, polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) soil contamination, and heavy metals contamination.  Conduct subcontractor coordination and oversight including excavators, drillers, geophysicists, and lead, asbestos, and mold abatement contractors. 

Environmental Technician Duties: 

  • Gather environmental data by applying chemistry and engineering principles.
  • Determine characteristics or composition of solid, liquid, or gaseous materials by conducting chemical, physical, and field tests, using pH meter, chemicals, analytical instrumentation, and various field data collection equipment.
  • Assess water pollutants by collecting water samples from streams and lakes, groundwater monitoring wells, and industrial wastewater.
  • Determine chemical composition and nature of land pollutants by collecting soil and sediment samples.
  • Maintain environmental databases by tabulating and reporting information requirements.
  • Prepare, summarize, and chart by gathering and testing samples, interpreting analytical results, and summarizing findings and trends.
  • Maintain environmental analytical instrumentation, mechanical equipment, and other test instrumentation by installing, operating, completing preventive maintenance requirements, following manufacturer's instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions, maintaining equipment inventories, evaluating new equipment, and techniques.
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Maintain the reputation of the organization and represent the VET brand by complying with legal and waste management requirements and perform in a professional and responsible fashion.
  • Conserve resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing business networks, and participating in professional societies.

Qualifications:

  • One to two years of related work experience
  • Strong problem-solving ability
  • Familiarity with hand and power tools and demonstrated experience using this equipment
  • Familiarity with chemistry techniques, lab environment, waste treatment, analyzing information, equipment maintenance, attention to detail, research skills, and reporting research results
  • Familiarity with and demonstrated ability to use the Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe products
  • Ability to work well and self-motivate in a collaborative team environment
  • Ability to work in variable conditions, including uneven surfaces and access to remote sites
  • Strong team player with effective internal and external communication skills
  • Some travel required
  • Desire to grow professionally and to be promoted within the VET Team
